Resurrect Dead

ChesapeakeHouseMDGreetings, Dreamers!

I wanted to talk about something that has become a bit of an obsession.  I am one of those people who, if presented with a mystery, won’t stop until I’ve figured it out.  So I’ve been researching a 30-year-old mystery that I myself witnessed back when I lived in the Philadelphia area — The Toynbee Tiles.

There have been many that have come before me about this particular mystery.  Everyone has their own opinions, and it is time that I share some of my thoughts on the subject.  There is a wonderful documentary called “Resurrect Dead – The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles” that was done a few years back.  Using that documentary and my own independent research and thought exercises I think I have a pretty good idea about what is going on here.  But first let me explain the mystery:

In the early 1980’s, tiles, like the one depicted above, started popping up all over Philadelphia.  The tiles are embedded into the pavement through an ingenious method of using tar paper, asphalt glue, and linoleum.  The persons placing these tiles, or Tilers, cut the messages meticulously out of linoleum, then they deploy them through various means.  Tiles have been found in many cities all over the country and even in Argentina and Chile.  The message is always the same:

TOYNBEE IDEA
IN KUBRICK’S 2001
RESURRECT DEAD
ON PLANET JUPITER

Now let us dissect this message one line at a time as if it were a Nostradamus quatrain:

TOYNBEE IDEA

Arnold Toynbee was a British Historian & Philosopher.  His autobiographical work, “Experiences” delves into his beliefs on god, religion and the universe.  It seems that Toynbee’s idea comes from a series of passages in his discussion on the spirit:

Human nature presents human minds with a puzzle which they have not yet solved and may never succeed in solving, for all that we can tell. The dichotomy of a human being into ‘soul’ and ‘body’ is not a datum of experience. No one has ever been, or ever met, a living human soul without a body… Someone who accepts—as I myself do, taking it on trust—the present-day scientific account of the Universe may find it impossible to believe that a living creature, once dead, can come to life again; but, if he did entertain this belief, he would be thinking more ‘scientifically’ if he thought in the Christian terms of a psychosomatic resurrection than if he thought in the shamanistic terms of a disembodied spirit.

Toynbee eludes to the fact that resurrection is possible, but did he really mean dead people or something else? This message is augmented by the story The Toynbee Convector by Ray Bradbury, the premise also being based on another Toynbee idea that we must always rush to meet the future in order to survive, which means, we must believe in a better world and create a better world.  Life, after all, is a Waking Dream, as I’ve said on many occasions.

IN KUBRICK’S 2001

In Stanley Kubrick‘s magnum opus, 2001: A Space Odyssey, the story ultimately revolves around the cyclical nature of life and the cosmos.  This movie still has profound effects on people seeing if for the first time.  Even though it was done over 40 years ago, the message, the effects and the plot could easily be mistaken for a newer movie.  It has truly endured the test of time.  I believe that the Tilers had all seen this movie, and began to formulate their own beliefs on how we as a civilization can be resurrected.  The movie is based on a short stories by Arthur C Clarke called “The Sentinel” and “Jupiter V”.

RESURRECT DEAD

This particular passage is not as obvious as one would think, but on the surface it is believed that the Tilers were trying to explain that all the dead on the planet could be resurrected…

ON PLANET JUPITER

This is also not as clear as it may seem.  This could be seen as a direct reference to the movie 2001, which revolves around a mission to Jupiter.  However, people as ingenious as the Tilers would know from the book adaptation of the movie, which came out right after the movie, has the mission going to Saturn and not to Jupiter.  Kubrick’s special effects department could not model a believable Saturn with its rings, so they chose to model Jupiter instead.  However, in “Jupiter V” there is another clue because the space craft in that story, The Arnold Toynbee, does go to a moon around Jupiter.  Why would Clarke name the ship the Arnold Toynbee unless he, too, believed in his ideas?

THE TILERS AND THEIR MOTIVE

Each tile has a smaller side text attached and eludes to a grand conspiracy between the media, our government and the U.S.S.R.  Immediately one would think that they are merely a group of conspiracy theorists, yet, that is not the main purpose of the message.  The quatrain is the main message, the sub text is warning others to be wary of the media, and make more tiles.  Over the years it is clear that other Tilers have joined the movement because the styles have changed, and we have exceeded the life span of the one person, I believe, was responsible for beginning the movement, but we’ll talk about that shortly.

No one person has claimed responsibility for the tiles, however there was a group called the Minority Association which had connections to the message and philosophy of the tiles.  There are three suspects uncovered who would have the intellect, means and motive for trying to spread this message:

1) James Morasco – A carpenter from Philadelphia who had a beef with the local media mogul John Knight, and had a fatal disease.

2) Severino Verna – A blue-collar worker from Philadelphia whose family owns a funeral home.  He was also known to be extremely intelligent and kept dead pigeons so that he might be able to bring them back to life one day.

3) Railroad Joe – A rail worker who worked lines that ran near areas where tiles were found.

But the fact of the matter is that their identity was never meant to be discovered, and most likely never will.  The message is not about a person, it is about the message itself.  This group of Tilers, the Minority Association, saw something that today we still do not see.  And this is the core of my conclusion.

MY CONCLUSIONS

I believe that the person who began the tiling and came up with the original idea was James Morasco.  He mentions in a tile that he had a fatal disease.   We know that James Morasco had his voice box removed, mostly likely due to cancer.  He was faced with his own mortality, yet, I believe it was more than his own mortality he was concerned with.  The media do control the message, and did even more so back in the days of the Cold War.  But I believe that his original hypothesis was that we are killing our civilization.  This is another Toynbee idea. “Civilizations die from suicide, not by murder.”  If we are killing our planet, we are committing suicide.

Jupiter has many moons, and I believe that the Tilers believe that we need to colonize those moons to save our own world from extinction.  I interpret “Resurrect Dead” as resurrecting our dying civilizations, but learning from what we did wrong.  I know there are many people who want to turn a blind eye to the fact that our climate is changing.  I am a data geek, and though I don’t have all the data NOAA and other organizations have, I can see for myself that the climate has changed in my short 44 years on this planet.  I am addicted to the weather, and process roadway weather in my data experiments.  Things are not as they should be.

This is further exacerbated by the Solar Maximum, which happens every twelve years.  This is a time when our sun is most active and produces massive solar flares and coronal mass ejections.  This is to say that the sun has an eruption, like a million nuclear weapons going off all at once, then it shoots the debris in the direction of the blast.  This is what causes the Aurora at the poles.  And in the beauty of the Auroras is hidden a destructive force — Electro Magnetic Pulses.  While this is not directly harmful to humans, a large enough CME could wipe out ALL of our electronics.  A single burp from the sun could send us back into the dark ages.  Billions of people would die over the course of days.

I am not predicting the end of the world, because it is inevitable.  in 4 billion years our planet will be consumed when the sun expands to a Red Giant.  Our planet will be nothing more than a cinder floating around a dying sun. This is the cycle of our universe.  But, this effect would Jupiter a perfect candidate to retreat to.  There are so many moons, and there is water on some of them as recent probes have discovered, and scientists discovered in the 1970’s before the Voyager probes.

We are on a collision course with disaster if we continue to treat our planet this way.  Our Tilers know this, and they know that the media controls the message.  Any information that could trigger mass hysteria is suppressed.  One man’s plight has turned into a message that should not be ignored, nor be taken as the ravings of a madman.

And finally, we consider the film 2001, which is about a the stages of our evolution, and ultimate redemption.  It reminds us that we should not rely on technology for everything, embodied by HAL.  It reminds us that violence is never the answer.  It reminds us that all things in the universe is a cycle and we must forage ahead seeking new ways to ensure that we, our civilization, does not commit suicide for being short-sighted.  Kubrick believed this.  Clarke believed this. And Arnold Toynbee believed this.  If you look at the chronological events that happened in the year 2001, you can see that this movie is semi-prophetic, but that is something you need to research.

What does it all mean?  It means that if we must plan to colonize other worlds to ensure that our species survives.  We must learn that the wars we have fought have been needless.  We fight over dirt.  We fight over religion.  We fight over material things.  It is all summed up in Toynbee’s title, life is all about “experiences” and learning from our history.  We have learned from our history in all the wrong ways.  We have learned how to be more efficient at dealing death.  We have learned how to rape our planet to the point of extinction.  But we have not learned that we cannot stay on this planet forever.

I have said a great deal of things.  I respect Toynbee, Kubrick, Clarke and the Tilers.  They are trying to tell you something, but we are not listening.  My friends, the universe is a waking dream.  Each of us has the ability to force the powers that be to fix the problems.    Force them to see that our planet, our civilization is dying.  Awaken your weirdness and change the world.

So I will leave you tonight with a message from the Tilers, hidden in the subtext. “You must make + glue the tiles!  You!!!”

Blog Tour: Great Minds

sleep-tight_826049Greetings, Dreamers!

Mark Meier, a fellow writer, asked me to join a blog tour last week.  I am very grateful to be recognized by my colleagues and be asked to join in the fun!

Before I answer the questions for the tour, I’d like to introduce another blogger/writer with amazing insight and ability, Victoria Craven.  Victoria runs the blog, The Autodidact in the Attic, which focuses on the macabre, horror and a wide variety of intellectual stimulus.  Here is her bio:

V.L. Craven lives with her husband and pets. She writes fiction—both short and long—and reviews of books, films & art, as well as essays, articles and interviews with all sorts of interesting people.

She’s always appreciated the darker side of life, which is the focus of her blog The Autodidact in the Attic, (see also its Facebook page). TAitA has reviews of books, films, art, apps and games (and interviews with creators of those things) that will appeal to people with an interest in the macabre or gothic.

Other Ways to Interact with Her:
On Twitter: @vlcraven
On Tumblr: vlcraven.tumblr.com
On Goodreads: V. L. Craven

She will be posting her answers to the blog tour questions next Monday, so do yourself a favor and check out her amazing site.

Now on to my answers:

1) What am I working on?

I am always working on a variety of projects simultaneously,  that’s just how my brain works.  Right now,  I am doing a serial short story on this blog, writing Book II in the Waking Dream Series — The Unkindness — and I am involved in a collaborative series with two other authors (details to come later this year).  My Waking Dream Series is the primary focus and I am always doing research as the it covers alternate history, philosophy, and science.

2) How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I write novels and short stories.  My short stories tend to be very dark.  My favorite short stories are the ones I write in Lovecraftian style.  I am no Lovecraft, mind you, however I have enormous respect for his creations and imagination.

The Waking Dream series is really a mixture of many genres, so it is very hard to put it in any one box — I am not a fan of being pigeonholed.  The Waking Dream Series is an attempt to blur the lines between fantasy and reality.  Much of the subject matter is based on years of research.  I have always been fascinated with the paranormal and the supernatural — specifically the potential of the human mind.  The Waking Dream is my attempt to present a plausible framework for readers to suspend their disbelief and explore their own lives.  Life is a dream, if you really think about it.  We always have control over how our lives go, no matter the situation.  And once you believe that, you can do anything.

The Waking Dream series has elements of horror, paranormal, supernatural, romance, dystopia, apocalyptic events and fantasy.  It is very dark.  One of my fans put it, “It’s the Matrix meets The Stand”.  The first book is my Fellowship of the Ring. It is the twilight before the sun sets on our world. The subsequent books will descend further into the darkness of reality and the human mind.

One final note, there are many things hidden within the stories and novels, tying them together as well as giving avid readers something to discover within the text.  Everything in the Waking Dream Series is carefully calculated.  What have you found hidden within the story?

3) Why do I write what I do?

I love to create worlds.  The Waking Dream is, as I mentioned, an attempt to impart all I’ve learned about the human condition and get the reader to explore and create their own dream.  The world seems to be at an impasse, and we are not moving forward as we should from a philosophical sense.  While the Waking Dream is fiction, there are elements of truth in ever sentence I write — the things I believe to be true.

I write the Lovecraftian stories because I want his legacy to continue, as well as many other authors.  Being able to create a story that emulates the master gives me a sense of humility.  Many writers have walked in his footsteps, but his personal commitment to his craft is something to be admired, respected and remembered for all time.

4) How does my writing process work?

I don’t have a specific process for writing.  When I feel like writing, I write.  And because I have a wide variety of projects I am working on at any given time, I choose the project to work on that most suits my particular mood.  I believe that an author needs to be prolific to be successful.  Very few authors become successful with one book, or even their first book.  The more work you have out, you have a better chance of being discovered by new readers.  It is a snowball effect.

One thing I do tend to stick to in any project is that I usually begin with an illustration.  Next to writing, illustrating is one of my favorite hobbies.  I have over 50 illustrations for the Waking Dream,  as well as maps.  I want the Waking Dream to be similar to the Cthulhu Mythos so that other authors can contribute their own stories to the ever-growing Waking Dream Universe.

I hope that you’ve enjoyed this little excursion into my writing career.  Perhaps you’ll be interested in reading my work, which is listed on the right side bar.  Please be sure to check out Victoria Craven’s answers next Monday on her blog.

Happy Monday!

Why the Waking Dream?

DevlinI get asked on many occasions why I’ve spent so much time working on this series before I wrote the book.  Part of it was procrastination, but the biggest reason was the allegory behind the Waking Dream.

When I was a kid, I was very much enamored by H.P. Lovecraft and the Cthulhu Mythos.  The idea of a writer creating a framework for other writers to contribute to was fascinating to me.  And since the story “The Call of Cthulhu” was released in 1926, scores of renowned authors have taken their turn to try to rouse the Ancient Ones from their slumber.

I initially came up with the idea for the Waking Dream in 1995 as a Dungeons and Dragons style role-playing game.  It was first premiered on Internet Relay Chat, where I had over 100 people playing at any given time.  But as I began to write these elaborate story lines for others to interact with, it occurred to me that it would be more useful to write stories and novels, rather than a bunch of rules and dice play.  The Waking Dream began to evolve.

I stepped away from the online role-play world and began to do serious research on how to make the Waking Dream a framework.  But along the way, it started to become something much more than that.  It started to become a philosophical debate on the nature of existence – a subject that has haunted me my entire adult life.  I have for a long time stopped reading fiction, and jumped headlong into physics, cosmology, religion, philosophy, mathematics and metaphysics.  And along the way, I created an entire universe populated by Dreamers, Sleepers and Immortals and solved — in my mind — the answers to our universe.

It does not matter really what comprises the universe, how it came to be, or where it will go from here.  What does matter is the voyage and exploration of the self and understanding that we are all connected at a fundamental level, and the universe is our playground.  We have gone about our search for the answer in the wrong way.  Rather than trying to understand our consciousness and our spirit, we’ve leaped into the abyss, searching for answers in the stars — but the answer is in each and every one of us.

The Waking Dream books and stories and framework are to give us a way to be children again, when we looked at everything with wonder. Magic and Monsters are everywhere, we’ve just chosen not to see them in the same way we once did.  We’ve allowed what we call the “common reality” — what the majority believes to be true — to make us blind to the true nature of the universe and thus, ourselves.

For me, the Waking Dream is not about making money, it’s about throwing a new idea out on the table for everyone to see.  And in turn, I expect others to take up the mantle and submit their own stories about the Waking Dream.  Because, in the Waking Dream anything is possible.  And if we all take a moment to realize the Dream as something wonderful, it will be wonderful.  But at the moment, we are creating a nightmare.

Waking Dream: Devlin is just the first of many novels to come.  If you are looking to escape for just a little while, and you believe in any of the things I have said, I believe you will enjoy walking with me in the Waking Dream.

Waking Dream (Part 4)

WeirdnessGreetings, Dreamers!

Today, as promised, we are going to explore the concepts of the Weird and Weirdness which is borrowed from the concept Quantum Weirdness, or what Einstein called Spooky Action at a Distance.  There is one such known phenomenon that I discussed in a previous post called Quantum Entanglement, which is an unexplained mystery where by two particles can be created and sent across the vast distance of our universe, and if you change the spin of one particle, the other one instantaneously changes its spin.  This, my friends, is the very basis for all of my theories behind the Waking Dream, the fundamental Oneness of all things in the universe, and the argument for magic, which I simple call Weirdness.

I have taken liberty through my own studies and thought exercises to conclude that Dark Energy is the basis for this weird behavior of our universe.  In my theory, Dark Energy is all information stored since the beginning of our universe, which is why it constitutes a whopping 68.3% of our universe — and it continues to grow as the expansion of the universe demonstrates.

In a paper published by my friend Erik Andrulis, “Theory of the Origin, Evolution, and Nature of Life.” he posits arguments which could further the idea of this interconnectedness of our universe and all of the fundamental particles.  I highly recommend that you give it a read and come to your own conclusions.  It is time to go back to the drawing board and look at our wonderfully amazing universe from a different perspective.

The Way of the Weird

The Weird

All things are created from what I call The Weird, it is an energy source that allows matter to be created and manipulated.  It exists in a place between our reality, which I have called the Spaces Between.  And in the bosom of the Weird all consciousness is created.  It is from this Weird that Dreamers and Immortals are able to manipulate the Waking Dream.  The ability to manipulate comes from the information and experiences we encounter in our day-to-day lives, forever recorded within the Spaces Between, allowing us to do amazing things.  Through this increased understanding of our universe, we are able to make things better — such as moving from mud huts, to homes, to skyscrapers.  All of this is inherently magical unto itself, however we have allowed it to simply become a mundane aspect of life.  The fact that you can move a glass from the table to your mouth, then back again, is in of itself Weird.  And we take it for granted.

In the Waking Dream, Dreamers and Immortals are able to tap into this eternal knowledge and there by manipulate the Dream, using an ability called Weirdness.  But rather than just using mundane actions to manipulate the Waking Dream, they are able to return magic to the world, both good and evil.

The Weirdness

Weirdness is magic of the Waking Dream.  It is the ability to manipulate things in a supernatural sense.  This gift comes from the knowledge that the universe IS a Waking Dream, and is not available to anyone who is not a Dreamer or an Immortal.  Being a Dreamer requires one to accept the fundamental principle that the universe is a Waking Dream and that everything within it is connected.  It is this interconnectedness that allows the Dream to be manipulated.  If you are connected to everything everywhere in the universe, then you can manipulate it through this connection.

Weirdness is like an electrical current that transmits your will to other connected objects, allowing one to act upon it.  We do this every day in a physical sense, but there are very few who have recognized that they can do this at the quantum level.  All particles only exist as matter when they are required to interact, this is what we have learned through the wave/particle duality phenomenon.  An electron, for instance, is not always there.  It has a probability to be anywhere in the universe, though the probability lessens the further due to its relative position in the current moment.  It also exhibits very strange properties which we still do not understand, but I will have to explain this more with an analogy.

Every single atom in your body is made of a nucleus which consists of protons and neutrons.  And orbiting this nucleus, are one or more electrons.  Now, here is Weirdness number one about the atom — it is mostly empty space.  If we were to compare a solar system to an atom, putting them on a similar scale, with the sun acting as the nucleus, and the planets are the electrons, the distances between the nucleus and the electrons would have just as vast distances as the planets do with the sun.  Hence it is mostly empty space between in each and every one of the billions of atoms that make up just your body.

The second Weirdness about the atom, is that the electrons move in completely unexplained ways from one orbit to the next.  They simply pop out of existence and appear in another orbit in the atom.  It is important to understand this point, they are there one moment, then somewhere else the next, with no time in between.  Taking our planet analogy, this would be like Mars and Earth instantaneously switching places in their orbits around the sun.  Earth and Mars would vanish simultaneously and reappear instantaneously in their different orbits.

The Weirdness ability in the Waking Dream uses these strange mysteries forces to cause things to be changed or come into creation.  This is possible because in the Weird all experience exists, and we all know this, but we have chosen to forget it.  But like any street magician, one must learn to fool the observer after much trial and error, until they perfect their trick.  This is why a Dreamer is born without knowledge of their inherent Weirdness, and they must find their own unique way to express it, as I explain in my previous post.

Conclusion

This is a great deal of information for one to process, but there are many books and theories the both support and invalidate what I have said.  This cancellation, thrusts my assertions into the realm of philosophical debate.  It can only be tested one way, one must believe it, and simply do it.

Over the course of my life, I have met people with very strange abilities that I would absolutely call Weirdness.  I have met charlatan magicians and fortune-tellers, but I have also met people who have been able to tell things or see things that they could not possible have known or observed in 10 minutes.  Magic still exists, as any child will tell you.  Perhaps it is time to look at the world around you and see it as a child would, full of wonder and awe and unfettered beliefs.  It is only then that you an Awaken your Weirdness and change the world to be what it has the potential to be.

Next time, we will explore the realms of the Waking Dream Universe — The Waking Dream, the Sleeping Dream, and the Spaces Between.

Waking Dream (Part 3)

WeirdnessGreetings, Dreamers!

In my last post we discussed the concepts of Immortality in the Waking Dream Universe.  Today we are going to discuss the two other types of beings in the Waking Dream Universe — Dreamers and Sleepers.

But before we begin, I wanted to clarify that a Planet-Bound Immortal was once a Dreamer, and it is through the process of Awakening and Enlightenment that a Dreamer becomes an Immortal.

There is a two tiered allegorical argument when we speak of Dreamers and Sleepers.  Dreamers, and Immortals, are the Architects of the Waking Dream.  They are also those who will not sit idly by and allow their lives to be affected by others.  They are people from all walks of life, from white-collar to blue-collar.  Sleepers on the other hand, are the engineers or worker bees.  They are people who do not accept that they have control over their life and look to the Dreamers to lead them.  This is not meant as a derogatory statement, it is a simple observation.  In one sense, Dreamers are the observer, collectively, in a solipsistic world, where the Sleepers do not really exist other than to be actors in the Dreamer/Immortal play.

Of Sleepers and Dreamers

Sleepers

In the Waking Dream, Sleepers can best be thought of as automatons, or robots.  They are the vessel through which Dreamers can occupy the Waking Dream.  They are born, live their lives according to the design of the Dreamers and Immortals.  They are a function of the grand algorithm created at the beginning of the universe, as designed by the Creator.  Their main purposes are to make the world for the Dreamers to live in, and serve as bodies for the Dreamers to interact with the physical reality. As mentioned in my first post in the series, when a Dreamer dies, they return to the Spaces Between, which can be compared to the Afterlife, or what I like to call, the InBetweenLife.  It is the realm of the Weird, and it is from there that all consciousness emanates.

One point that needs to be made is that any living thing is a Dreamer, so it is not limited to humans.  It may be the desire of a Dreamer to inhabit an animal, or a tree, because the Waking Dream is about experiencing the universe.  We created the Waking Dream to explore every aspect of the universe, because it is a gift to have consciousness, and a gift to have such an amazingly diverse reality to explore.

Dreamers

Dreamers, at the base level, are pure consciousness.  When they are not inhabiting a Sleeper and affecting the Waking Dream, they can peer into the life of any Sleeper and determine whether they wish to inhabit them.  They also, for a limited time, can enter the Waking Dream, in an incorporeal form.  Both Sleepers and corporeal Dreamers, can sometimes see them in these ghostly forms, which is where ghost sightings come from.  Sometimes, they do forget that they are not in a body, and will return to a place they died again and again, depending on the manner of their death.  Particularly violent deaths can cause a Dreamer to temporarily get stuck in a pattern, and this is what constitutes a haunting.

When a Dreamer enters the body of a Sleeper, at any stage of the Sleeper’s life, they take on the memories and persona of that Dreamer, much like when one chooses a character in a game.  They forget all their past lives and memories, and the fact that they are a Dreamer.  This is when they begin the quest to Awaken and use their Weirdness to affect the Waking Dream.  One can think of this as learning how to operate a new vehicle.  Once the Dreamer has full control of the vehicle, and knows its limitations, both physically, mentally and socially, the Dreamer can then undergo the process of Awakening, which happens differently for everyone.  It is usually brought on by trauma of some variety, like someone slapping you in the face saying “Wake up!”.

Dreamers are connected to the Spaces Between by the Somnambula, or what used to be called the Silver Cord.  This is how they are able to channel the energy, or Weirdness, to affect the Waking Dream.  This also accounts for why Dreamers experience deja vu, as sometimes a location, conversation or experience, triggers a memory stored in the Weird.

All Dreamers exert their will on the Waking Dream in different ways, but they are usually subtle, as it takes a great deal of energy to create more dramatic effects, such as throwing a fireball at someone, which is possible, but usually only by Immortals who have a greater command of their Weirdness.  Dreamers usually exert their Weirdness through either mundane abilities such as charisma to become a leader, or extraordinary creative abilities such as musicians, artists or writers.  The more famous a Dreamer is usually tied to their Weirdness.

Other Dreamers exert their will in supernatural ways, such as practicing ritualistic magic, such as alchemy, Wicca, witchcraft or illusions.  Others have abilities such as empathy, telepathy, telekinesis, or second sight.  But there are many more ways in which Dreamers can exert their Weirdness.

Conclusion

In closing, I would like to propose to you a personal experiment.  While I am presenting these ideas of the Waking Dream as fiction, there are some truths woven within this view of the universe as a Waking Dream.  I tend to think that the only people who read my blog are Dreamers.  They are people seeking others to share their thoughts, and learn from one another.  They want to believe that they have greater control of their life and environment, yet they lack the solidarity from others with the same thoughts.  This can be seen with the development of religion.  Each religion has common beliefs among all of its members so that their beliefs become more real to the collective.

Take a look at your life, and see if you have your own Weirdness.  Is it possible that all of the universe is really not what we think it is?  Is it possible we are responsible for everything that happens on our planet on every level?  The universe is inherently weird in the way that it operates.  We still have not come to any conclusive evidence than anything we see is actually there.  There is no way to know, and that, my friends, makes life all the more mysterious, wonderful and exciting to explore.  If we have limits, it is because we have imposed those limits upon ourselves.

Next time, we will discuss Weird and Weirdness in the Waking Dream.

Waking Dream (Part 1)

Waking DreamGreetings, Dreamers!

Today I start a new series of posts describing the philosophy behind my upcoming novel, Waking Dream: Devlin Book I. The book will be going on sale on September 22, 2013 — The first day of Autumn.  As an side note, all dates in the book and the actual release dates all play into the overall mystery of the series.

Let’s Begin!

At the basis of it all, the concept of the Waking Dream stems from my own personal studies in a variety of areas.  Its more than just a series of fiction novels, it is an interwoven collection of things I have come to understand to be plausible with reference to the nature of our universe, the formation of life, the human soul and consciousness.  I assert that our present scientific endeavors are looking for the wrong things and that some of the things presented as fact are indeed quite wrong.  There are far too many unknowns, and most of all, we cannot understand nor explain the most fundamental aspect of our universe, Gravity.  In addition, there is this lack of unifying the physics of the big things in our universe (stars, galaxies, planets, life) and the physics of the very small, quantum level (atoms, electrons, singularities).  Even though there has been significant effort in this area, we are still no closer to a true Theory of Everything — well, not an accepted theory that is.  At the end of this post I will list some of the books that have helped shape my understanding of the universe.

The Story of Creation

I began with the Unmoved Mover principle posited by Aristotle in his work Metaphysics. I had been struggling with my own agnosticism at the time, and had been reading the works of St. Thomas Aquinas as a part of my theology curriculum.  After much study in this area, I determined that I had become more of a Deist and that we are responsible for how our lives unfold.  The essence of Free Will.  If the Creator is intervening in our lives, then we do not truly have Free Will.  And I think this is personified even in the bible as “If a man will not work, he shall not eat” (2 Thessalonians 3:10) [“God helps those who helps themselves” is an ancient Greek derivative of this, yet not found in the bible thusly quoted]

In the Waking Dream, the Creator set the parameters for the universe, then moved on to other places, perhaps checking in on us from time to time out of curiosity.  I have always found it quite paradoxical to think that an all supreme being would need us to worship him.  We have created a God to worship for a variety of reasons — mostly to explain the things we cannot explain.  But as time moves forward, we will require God less and less.  This is the fundamental aspect of my philosophy behind the Waking Dream.  Once we realize we are all One being, with each of us a facet of that one being, we will no longer need to rely on a God because we will realize that we are all God and One.

In the beginning, there was One — the first Immortal.  It is he who set into motion the creation of the stars, galaxies, planets.  And through this, other consciousnesses began to form in a place called The Spaces Between, the source of all the energy necessary for matter to exist.  Souls/Spirits coalesce much in the same way stars do, swirling thoughts that accreted from this primordial energy.

One is just the first, and not God.  And through him, the other Celestial Immortals were created through a predefined equation.  From his essence, the Magician and the High Priestess came into being.  They are the ones who created the parameters by which the incorporeal enter the physical realm of the Waking Dream. They also are the ones that defined the ability to affect the Waking Dream, known as Weirdness, my form of magic.

From the Magician and High Priestess, came the last of the Celestial Immortals, the Triad.  They are the Dexter who governs Order, the Sinister who governs Chaos, and the Charnel One who governs death and reincarnation.  And through the Triad the shells that our souls inhabit in the Waking Dream were created, the Sleepers.

All souls, or Dreamers and Immortals, must inhabit a body in the physical world to exist.  Once they have done so, they live out their lives and eventually Awaken to understand that the universe is a Waking Dream.  From this point, they are able to use the inherent Weirdness within all Dreamers to subtly affect the Waking Dream, making the world as it is today.  And when they die, they return to the Spaces Between to begin all over again.  A Dreamer does not consciously remember their former life, except through the phenomenon of Deja Vu.  But when they return to the Spaces Between they retain all of the knowledge of their multitude of lives.  This continues until they reach the state of Immortality, the goal of every Dreamer.

The next part in this series will explore Immortality and the differences between the Celestial Immortals and the Planet Bound Immortals.

The Universe (Part 3)

enlightenmentGreetings Dreamers!

Initially, I was going to write about gravity as my next foray into exploring our universe.  But over the last few days I’ve had some very interesting conversations and read some interesting material that has changed my mind.

Today I want to discuss the only way we can truly understand the universe — Enlightenment.

This has been something that I have been struggling with since first I heard the term, then understood the process.  However, I am not talking about Buddhist enlightenment, where by attaining enlightenment frees us from rebirth.  I am talking about enlightenment in the sense that the universe reveals itself to you, thereby revealing you to yourself.

We have spent a great deal of time and energy to measure, quantify and categorize all the things that make up the universe.  We done a bang up job at this.  We’ve discovered elementary particles quarks, electrons, neutrons, protons and muons, to name a few.  We’ve discovered black holes, quasars, neutron stars, gamma ray bursts and planets far beyond our tiny little solar system.  We have discovered limitations, rules, equations and barriers.  We have sent ourselves and objects hurtling into the jungle beyond, crying out for someone else in the darkness.  And what has this produced?  Just more questions.  There will always be questions, and they will never end until we know everything. But what’s the point of existing if you know everything.

I have had some moments where I can see lucidly, beyond my own human flaws, fears and insecurities.  Moments where you can connect with someone on an indescribably level, or moments when the answer just falls out of the sky and begs me to accept it.  So my most recent, yet fleeting moment of enlightenment was actually a proper definition of what enlightenment really is.

Enlightenment is accepting the simple fact that we are the universe.  All of these little particles and atoms we are made of were created out of necessity for us to explore the physical universe, which is only 4% of the entire universe.  And that 4% is unimaginably massive.  We can’t even see the entire universe with our telescopes, we can only see as far as the light reaching us originate from, so no one really knows how far it goes.  It is the greatest mystery, and the greatest adventure.  And we create these mysteries for ourselves, to entertain ourselves, just like the games we invent, or the books we write. Life is the same, we live a time as someone or something, then we move on to experience something new.  Understanding the universe will begin when we truly understand ourselves.

I believe there are two ways that we can explore the universe.  The first is rebirth.  We move from body to body, world to world, exploring, living, enjoying.  We are constantly being reborn, and it doesn’t have to be here on this planet.  There are more planets than stars in the universe, and there is most definitely life on these other planets.  I do not know this, I feel this — if we are all the universe, then we are connected to life forms on every planet that does or had existed.  In this life I am Michael, in a previous life I could have been a flapper in the 1920’s, or a scientist on a far distant planet that has sent my own message to find life elsewhere.

We are not limited to these bodies, nor must we die to explore because the second way is through transcendence and allowing our souls to detach from our machine and roam freely, knowing that we can return at anytime.  Life when you sleep, where do you truly go?  Have you ever been someplace in a dream that you’ve never been, then at a later date, you visit and have an overwhelming sense of deja vu?  This is transcendence, we do it all the time, we just don’t remember it completely because our brain returns our focus to the waking state, and slowly forgets the dream because it doesn’t pertain to the here and now.

The creator and god are not the same, in my opinion.  I posit that the creator was the architect, and god was the engineer.  And since we engineer our reality, we must be god.  We have gotten so wrapped around the axle about god and who created the universe, and we’ve forgotten how powerful we truly are – how powerful all life is.  An ant can carry 50 times its weight.  Humpback whales have a language of song.  We humans have awareness.  And awareness allows us to explore the aspects of enlightenment.

I’m beginning to feel as if I am approaching this enlightenment.  Petty things that once mattered to me have fallen by the wayside.  I seldom sit in front of the computer or TV anymore — I work I’m outside, engage in conversation with someone, or listen to the thrushes that live in my garage.  I have lain on the grass in my back yard, and stared up at Jupiter and felt its pull on me.  This is how it all begins.  Just letting your mind free from the taught reality.  Let your mind wander into your own reality — it is what makes life so interesting, makes each moment wonderful.

So I will end today’s post with a simple question:  Have you ever felt one with the universe?

The Universe (Part 2)

OneGreetings Dreamers!

Continuing with our exploration of the universe, and all its glory, I want to talk about Oneness.  Now you may think that this is not something related to the existence of the universe, but it is its most fundamental aspect.

The universe is an isolated system.  Which means all of the energy — and subsequently matter — is finite.  Which means, no new energy can enter or leave the universe.  It can only change forms, and it constantly does.

Before we get into the nitty-gritty of Oneness, let us talk about the fundamentals.  Every atom in your body was created by a star. From the carbon that forms all the molecules that make up your cells, to the iron in your blood, to the hydrogen and oxygen that make up the water, to the gold in your wedding band.  Every bit of it was created by a star.  This means, that we are literally made up from the cinders of burning stars.

We gain our energy from sunlight.  All of the energy that drives us in one form or another is derived by the sun directly or indirectly.  We consume plants and animals that are nourished by the sun.  And when they die or we die, we give up that energy for new life to be reborn, and the cycle continues until this planet is no more.  We cannot escape this.  And to think that any one of us is any better than another is plainly and simply wrong.  We all come from the same thing — no matter how much money you have, or what color your skin, or what religion you believe.  We are all connected physically this way.

But now, let us move onto the spiritual or energetic relationship we share.  As I mentioned in my previous post, I believe that all the knowledge and experience we create is shared amongst ourselves.  We are all teachers and students.  We thrive when we are learning from one another and sharing what we know.  This extends far into the past, as we learn from our collective histories, and into the future as we know what is to come.  It is only when we recognize that we are all connected that we can truly shed our differences and embrace each other as kin.

In my last post, I mentioned the existence of a creator, and I wanted to take a moment to discuss that, because our individual perceptions of a creator are as varied as there are people on the planet.  Since I cannot prove nor disprove God, I would never make a statement that there is no God.  I spent most of my life as an application programmer and architect. I know that an application does not write itself, nor can a house design itself.  The variables that define the universe are so exquisitely defined that if just one of them were changed infinitesimally, the universe would not exist at all.  If gravity were just a little strong or a little weaker, nothing would be as it is now.  All our atoms would fly apart, or the universe would crush in on itself.  So, being a programmer, I am willing to say that in the beginning there was an architect, but I cannot tell you whether he is within or without of our system.

But now that the universe exists, and it has balance.  We have become the stewards.  There really is no need for a God figure because we have been given everything we need to exist. And now we all are collectively God, because we are in control of our reality whether we accept the responsibility or not.  Accepting this responsibility is the most difficult thing we humans struggle with.  Some of us accept it openly, while others want to believe that they need guidance by a supernatural entity.  That is not necessary, because we have one another to admonish ourselves when we are wrong, and praise ourselves when we do amazing things.

The glue that makes us One, is that we are connected through a complex web of inter-relations, vis-a-vis, love, compassion.  When we make a friendship, we become connected to the friends of our friends, ad infinitum.  Social Media can show us that we all are connected at nth degrees of separation.  And though I’m not a fan of Facebook, it has shown me that you can follow a trail from one of your friends to just about anyone else on the planet.  It has exposed that we are all truly connected either directly or indirectly.  But I will take a leap and say that we are connected a much more fundamental levels.

Last night, a friend of mine posted this reply in response to my last post.  It is one of the most poignant observations I’ve read and I wanted to share it with you all.

It’s hard for Me – that is, everyone that I am, anyone that I am – to come to terms with being God…but once I know Myself, well, then, I know I am old and young, good and evil, man and woman, sick and healthy, straight and gay, and so on – how could I not have compassion, acceptance, love, and understanding of Myself? – Dr. Erik Andrulis

I urge you to check his blog, because he is on the same path as I am.  And his insights might give you further food for thought.

So today, I will end this post with another question, and I ask you to step out of yourself before answering.  Look at your friendships, your relationships, your family: Do you believe that every human on this planet is connected at a spiritual level or are we just islands in the sea?

The Universe (Part 1)

Dark EnergyGreetings Dreamers!

This next series is all about MY perspective of the universe.  Before we begin, I am not a physicist but I have read a great deal about it, and many books by some of the greatest minds of our time — both past and present.  If you are a physicist or scientist and you do not agree what I say, or think I am off my rocker, please engage me in dialog.

My Waking Dream series is the sum of my understanding of the universe.  The basis of it all comes from a fundamental idea that the universe is inherently Weird.  The atoms that make up your body are mostly empty.  And sometimes the particles in these atoms aren’t always there.  They go somewhere we do not know. But for today, I want to talk about the source of Weirdness in my books — Dark Energy.

It has been posited that the universe is expanding due to the force of Dark Energy growing at a rate faster than the gravitational constant.  What I am proposing here is the basis for how I developed the idea, or philosophy, of the Weird.  If information cannot be lost, it must be stored somewhere.  Let us think of the universe as a balloon.  If I keep adding air to the balloon, it will continue to expand.  In my thinking the “air” of the balloon is the information that defines the paths of all particles in the universe.  If information about the path of all particles in the universe cannot be lost, or become unknown, then it must be stored somewhere.  Being a technologist, this suggests to me that there must be some cosmic hard drive with infinite backups, that record all movement of all particles in the universe.  Because at  the most fundamental level, we are made of billions of particles.  And the universe has to keep track of all of them. But, whether or not the universe will continue to expand and then eventually pop or collapse is highly debated.

Now, because I am a Deist at the most fundamental spiritual level — with other religious views intermingled from all my studies — I believe that the universe was created by an Architect, which we call God.  God set the parameters, and the overall design, but we are the ones who engineer the universe to our liking.  Having said that, our souls are also recorded in the Dark Energy — which I believe exists in a realm called the Spaces Between.  When we die, we return to this place where all information is stored, and then we decide when or if we come back to the physical universe.

When I talk about drawing from the Weird, or using your Weirdness, we are drawing from the vast amount of information that has been discovered and known.  Everything that has ever been known or discovered exists somewhere.  And I firmly believe some people have already figured out how to navigate the webs of Dark Energy to find the answers and channel them back into our world.  I also believe we ALL can find out how to do this.  And this is what I call, Awakening your Weirdness.  By examining the vast amounts of information, not only in our world, but in the universe itself, we can become a better people, a better world.  And perhaps we will find that we don’t need to have space ships to travel. All we have to do is think, and we are there.

I felt it important to discuss this topic first, because from all my reading and studies, I believe that truly understanding the universe is only achievable by understanding dark energy.

There are many articles on the subject, and many differences of opinion.  But this is what my simian brain has synthesized from the minds of people like Einstein, Brian Green, Michio Kaku, Stephen Hawking, Nikola Tesla, James Gleick, John Wheeler and the list goes on.

So I leave you with this question:  Do you believe that the soul is recorded on the universe for all time?

How to Change the World (Part 5)

By Haveaniceday91Greetings Dreamers!

This is the last of this series, but don’t fret, I’m sure I’ll come up with something else to babble about by next week.

Before I begin, I wanted to explain the particular pictures I chose.  You’ll notice that I’ve chosen an image of someone holding the concept or thing that represents the focus of the blog.  I’ve chosen hands specifically, because I think they are the physical way we manipulate our world.  But we forget about the non-physical ways we can manipulate the world.  We all have amazing abilities, trapped within us.  Only a few have learned to use them.  Our hands are just the beginning.  And the other reason I chose hands is because everything I’ve said in this series is always within our grasp.  We just need to learn how to use harness the potential, together.

Today I wanted to sum everything up by taking a look at our wonderful and awe-inspiring universe.  Our bubble floating in the molasses of time, among a multitude of other universes in the endless sea of existence.  Most people do not take the time to really appreciate a very simple fact — the universe shouldn’t even exist.  Try as we might, we have not come to a consensus on how it was created, or even why? But the fact of the matter is that the universe exists because we are here to observe it.  Otherwise, there would be no point.  Everything that is not alive exists for a purpose.  And we give purpose to the universe.  This is of course my opinion, but it’s what I believe.  I believe wholeheartedly that the universe is not a random event.  I believe that there was some force at work that made it for us to explore and admire.  But, by the same token, I do not believe we are pawns on a cosmic chess board.  We are all responsible for our own actions, and we are all continuing to improve our tiny section of this unimaginably large thing that we inhabit.  There are more stars than we can count, and more being born every day.  But that is not what we should concern ourselves with.

The universe is the system in which we live.  We are conscious, thinking, feeling, dreaming beings.  We are not just candles that will extinguish and be no more.  We are immortal souls that are inexorably entwined in the fabric of the universe, and because information can never be lost– what is known cannot be un-known (not unknown, but cannot be forgotten once it is known).  We all know these things subconsciously, but through conditioning, we have limited ourselves.  The universe is inherently weird.  There are amazingly strange things that exist all over our universe, even within our own solar system, and on our beautiful blue planet.

The universe supplies us with endless imagination, and a place to explore between lives and in our current lives.  We spend time worrying about dying when that isn’t serving any purpose.  We will all die, because all things must live their life and be reborn.  Our sun will die, and its remains will make other stars and give elements for other things to live.  The universe is a cycle, no different from the ebb and tide of the seas with each passing day.  I say this because there is a pattern to everything, a cycle.  And this cycle is governed by very simple laws, the act in the absence of will.  We don’t understand gravity, but if you think about it, it only acts when something is not resisting it.  It is most important aspect of our universe, but it is also the weakest of all the forces.  We can and do defy gravity.  This makes all live extraordinary, because all life defies gravity.

Science is an attempt to outline the parameters of the universe, but it is quickly becoming a matter of philosophical thought.  Eventually, we will have discovered all we can about the universe.  We will continue down this long corridor, with many doors, peeking behind each one to see what secret is hidden within.  But eventually, we will come to a door we cannot pass, or even fathom what lies beneath.

One of the most fascinating things about our universe is the most simple particle/wave in our universe, the electron.  Electrons make up all of the things we call matter.  And they whizz around a nucleus, making all the different elements we see.  But, they are not there all the time, and they are not always where we thing they should be.  Sometimes, they simply vanish and re-appear.  We don’t know where they go when they are not here.  But we know that when they need to be here they are.  Yes, that is very weird.  In addition to that sort of Weirdness, they also can be ANYWHERE in the universe at any given time.  This is because they do not have a 0 percent chance of being anywhere in the universe, because they have to be able to be anywhere for reasons we don’t quite understand.  So that means, in my opinion, if a simple electron can be anywhere it wants, no matter how improbable, we can be anywhere we want — we just have to figure out how to be an electron.  This relates back to our imagination.

So how does this relate to changing our world?  It relates to the simple fact that our universe holds a great deal of secrets.  And before we can truly begin to explore our universe, which we are meant to do, we must prepare our people, our planet so that we have the ability to do so.  We can learn by observing the universe, see the beauty that arises from destructive forces, and learn how to turn disaster into something wonderful.  We have already had enough wars, now we should learn from them and move on.  An exploding star creates gold and silver and platinum, and most importantly, the carbon that makes life on earth possible.  Our wars have just begotten more wars and hatred.  Though some good has come out of our wars, it has clearly not been enough.

Ronald Reagan once said, “Mr. Gorbachev, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL”.  I am saying to the people of every country on the planet, “Leaders of the world, TEAR DOWN THESE BORDERS!”  Let us be one people, and maybe we will find a way to explore this amazing universe of ours, because wonders and inspiration await, just beyond our grasp.

I leave you with this question:  Do you believe in reincarnation and an eternal spirit?
