The Autodidact in the Attic

DevlinHello All!  I’ve just finished my first Author Interview with Victoria Craven on her highly intellectual Victoria/Gothic blog called The Autodidact in the Attic.  I highly recommend you read her site because she will challenge you to think.  The questions she asked about the Waking Dream made me think more intently about what I was trying to achieve, and she challenged me, gently, to defend my stances on life, religion and existence.  I thoroughly enjoyed the interview.

My interview is scheduled to be posted this coming Monday.  If you were wondering about the series, the books, the Waking Dream and my views, this is your best opportunity to understand the machinations drive the universe.

I urge you to explore the rest of her blog, despite her interview with me.

I will send the interview link first thing Monday when Ms. Craven provides it.

The Unkind Update III

Greetings Dreamers,

I just wanted to give you a status update on where we are with release of the books, and the progress of Book II The Unkindness — for those of you who had the opportunity to read the first edition of Devlin.

Tentatively, we will be releasing the illustrated version of Devlin in Late August or Early September.  After that we will be releasing the illustrated version of Immoral Memories with an additional story and illustrations on Halloween.  Soon after — assuming my creative streak continues — Book II The Unkindness will be ready for January of 2014.

The Unkindness is coming along much better than I expected and I guarantee, you will be shocked at the end of the book.  New characters will be revealed, the identity of the immortal traitor will be revealed, and the world will be changed forever.

For those of you who haven’t had a chance to visit http://wayoftheweird.com you might want to take a chance to read the stories there.  All of the additions to the Libellus Somnium are there, and I have been blogging the new stories of The Crier at Twilight on a weekly basis.  (Sometimes daily because, well, you know how the voices in your head do sometimes)

I’m getting the final edits for Devlin next week, so we will be on our way to getting the book out to reviewers before the release.  If you are a dark fantasy reviewer, blog or otherwise,  and have a large following on twitter or your blog, feel free to contact me for an eBook version as soon as it becomes available.

The Weirdness is coming!

Series Synopsis

I’ve posted a synopsis of the Waking Dream Series because I have been getting many questions on the series and the re-release of the books.  The Synopsis link is on the menu at the top.

The Waking Dream Series is in the same type of genre as The Dark Tower Series by Stephen King, or The Incarnations of Immortality by Piers Anthony.  However, unlike those series, I have plans for many many books and short stories.  While the main series is three trilogies, there will be much more to the Waking Dream Universe.

You’ll also want to visit The Way of the Weird website as it is an ongoing work of fiction, aimed at explaining the philosophy and mythos of the Waking Dream.

Follow me on this journey and help me mold the story to keep you engaged and wanting more.

I thank you all for your continued support!

Amazing News!

I’m beyond excited to tell you that my book is going to be published by Assent Publishing/Phantasm Books.  So I am finally saying good-bye to indie publishing!

They are currently picking up both my books for distribution so they will be re-edited, reformatted, and illustrated.

The original first additions will be available on Amazon until the ink is dry on the contract.  So if you’re interested in a new way of thinking, and a journey into a dark fantasy world, you should definitely check them out. These are now collector’s editions.  The new versions will be in hardback and paperback.  Thank you all for your continued support!

What is the Waking Dream?

I’ve been asked many times “What exactly are you trying to do with the Waking Dream Universe?”

I have actually been working on the Waking Dream Universe for about 15 years. It is the product of the many years I’ve spent studying religion, philosophy, cosmology and Quantum Mechanics. I wanted to write a series of novels that blurred all the lines between what is real and what is not, because when you really get down to it — can you actually describe reality? How do you know that what you are seeing is real? And, what if we had this innate ability to change it?

The Waking Dream is the universe — a place where we are free to create whatever we want and make our lives whatever we want. There are three types of beings in the universe — Dreamers, Sleepers and Immortals.

Dreamers are those of us who have the ability to use a primordial force known as the Weird — which is just my distillation of all the nebulous concepts that from throughout history such as the Tao, the Holy Spirit, the Akashic Record, the Force. It is the clay from which we mold the world. Dreamers have an ability called Weirdness, which allows them to affect the world around them in a very similar way to magick. But, a Dreamer cannot begin to use this ability until they realize that they are a Dreamer. They come into the world through a form of reincarnation. This is where the Sleepers come in.

Sleepers are merely those that have no ability to change the world around them. They breed and spread like the rest of the animals in the world, and their purpose is to fulfill the will of the Dreamers. And, they serve as reincarnation vessels for the Dreamers. When a Dreamer dies, they return to my form of the afterlife known as the Spaces Between. From there, they choose a Sleeper they wish to inhabit, and forget all of their previous lives [except at a subconscious level] and begin life all over again, trying to Awaken their Weirdness. Think of it as assuming a character in a game, yet you don’t know you are playing a game. And once you Awaken, you realize that there is something much more profound behind it all — Immortality.

All Dreamers are innately Immortal in spirit. A Dreamer can become Immortal and once that happens, they no longer forget who they are when they die and return. The bodies of the Sleepers are not Immortal, only the Dreamer soul that inhabits them. But, when they die, they can return and remember all of their experiences from past lives, and command greater control over the Weird.

The Waking Dream is the entire universe. Earth is special because it was the first planet in the universe to become inhabited by Dreamers. But there are countless other worlds where Dreamers and Immortals exist. However, Immortals are bound to their home planet — the place where they first became Immortal. And once the Earth is gone, they will be free to explore other worlds, but they’ll begin the process of becoming Immortal all over again.

I hope this gives you enough information to decide if the Waking Dream series intrigues you enough to follow me on this journey.

The Book of Awakening

[by Laertes of Crete]

I.

If you are reading this Libellus, you are a Dreamer, whether you have recognized this or not. Being a Dreamer carries responsibility, one most people are not willing to accept. Responsibility implies that one cannot blame another person for their actions, effectively avoiding causality. However, this is futile and childish to consider. If you are a Dreamer, you are creating the Waking Dream around you. If you’re life is good, it is because you have made it so and if it is bad, it is because you have made it so. No one else is responsible for your life other than you.

II.

Before you can begin to manipulate the Waking Dream, using your inherent Weirdness, you must Awaken. The body in which you live in was previously an empty Sleeper. This is because you have chosen to inhabit this body by observing their existence, much as one chooses a character in a role-playing game. When you are not participating in the Waking Dream, you roam the vast domain of the Weird known as The Spaces Between — which is mistakenly labeled as the Afterlife, it is the InBetweenLife. You have the ability to see into the Dream, and remember all of your past lives — unless you have only recently coalesced into a conscious soul, therefore you have chosen your first body, and you will have countless others.

III.

When the body dies, you will return to the Spaces Between and be allowed to choose another body. You assume the life of the Sleeper that you choose, and in this process, you forget all of your past lives except through residual memories that slowly seep into your sub-conscious through your tether to the Spaces Between known as the Somnambula — known in other cultures as the silver cord. This is the way of the Waking Dream, and you will not understand this amnesia until you attain Immortality.

IV.

The mere act of reading this book, the Libellus Somnium, will allow you to Awaken — given that you can overcome the disbelief imbedded in the soul of all Sleepers and realize that you are now in control of your future through the use of your Weirdness. You have only found this book, because you are a Dreamer, and if you can believe and understand everything within, you will then begin the journey of understanding your own variety of Weirdness — or magick — and then you may start the long journey of attaining Immortality.

V.

The Creator has initiated the Waking Dream, and in that created One — the first Immortal. It is he who has asked that we other Immortals expand on his first book, The Book of One, to assist the Dreamers in Awakening. A time of great transformation is upon us, and Dreamers and Immortals must unite and ensure that the Sleeper population is not eliminated. This would be disastrous as it will take centuries for new Sleepers to be created to allow the reincarnation cycle to continue, allowing interaction with the Dream once more.

VI.

To begin, you must understand — and you must realize that you will never understand the nature of the Waking Dream, because you, I and the others are not meant to understand it. This is the Will of the Creator, The Will of the Weird. This Dream is a gift, an adventure, an experience. Your soul coalesced from the Weird over eons, just as the gases coalesce into stars. And the moment you began to glisten in the darkness of the Spaces Between, you inhabited your first Sleeper. And you will continue to do so until all Dreamers in the universe have attained immortality and then the Dream will reset. This is the solution to the equation that governs the universe.

VII.

I urge you now to look deep within, and understand your role in the Waking Dream. You may simply decide to ignore this as a work of fiction and continue blissfully ignorant to the things that are going on that threaten the Dream. But I assure you, the struggle for the control of reality has already begun. Awaken your Weirdness and Change the World.

VIII

The Importance of Reviewing Indie Authors

Greetings Dreamers!

As an indie author, I don’t have the luxury of hiring highfalutin critics to review my work. And quite honestly, I don’t ever pay attention to the book critics, because that is the opinion of just one person. Like the New York Times or others in that same vein. The books that the media pick to highlight seldom seem to be as wonderful as they critics say.

People by items based on the readers opinion — and the more reviews a book has, the more a person knows if they will like a book, rather than putting their trust in just one person.

There have been over 500 downloads of my books, so I’m hoping that when you all get a chance to read it, you’ll pop over to amazon and leave me a review. It doesn’t matter if it is a good review or a bad review. They are both helpful to all indie authors — good reviews tell us what we did right, bad review help us improve our craft. No review is unhelpful.

Waking Dream Online

Waking Dream Online (www.wakingdreamonline.com) is the official site for my books, stories and expanded content surrounding the Waking Dream Universe.  I am attempting to build a mythos around which other writers can contribute and grow the ideas — Much like the idea behind the Cthulhu Mythos by Lovecraft [Though I am not at all professing to be anywhere near as talented as he]

The website will have additional content that is not available in the published books.

Currently there are two short stories available for reading in the blog

  • The Charnel House — The story of three gamers turned ghost hunter who stumble on a mysterious house that appears one autumn night in rural Pennsylvania.
  • The Place of the Sisters — This story is a side story set in the 1800’s about three albino girls who find a mysterious place of power in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

There is also the Libellus Somnium — The Little Book of Dreams, which is essentially the philosophy/religion of the Waking Dream Universe.

In addition, you can find out more information about my books, Immortal Memories and Waking Dream: Devlin Book I of the Transformation Series.  There are 9 books planned in the series, with many other side books, especially short story anthologies and histories for each of the Immortals.

All of my writing, music and illustrations revolve around expanding the Waking Dream.  I want to inspire people to embrace their own Weirdness so that we can improve the world.  Because, I truly believe that the universe is nothing more than a waking dream — all we have to do is embrace our individual Weirdness and change the world.

You can subscribe to my blog via this link, or you can login in using your WordPress, Facebook or Twitter.

Thank you all for your continued support and interest in my work.

Waking Dream: Devlin Plot

Now that Waking Dream: Devlin has been released, I wanted to take a moment to talk about the plot. Many of you have downloaded the Immortal Memories book, which was a collection of short stories about the Immortals. All of the Immortals in Immortal Memories make their appearance in the new novel, which is just the first in a series of 9 novels.

The town of Devlin is a town hidden by a force called The Weirdness. And the focus of the novel is the inhabitants trying to understand the visions of the elder of the town, Jonathan Weir. His powerful visions, a manifestation of his Weirdness or magick, have made him aware that an apocalypse is on the horizon, threatening all the world.

The novel takes the reader on a phantasmagorical journey between fantasy and reality, sanity and insanity, culminating with the realization that they have been unwitting pawns in an insidious plot that has been architected over a millennium.

I feel that once you read the first book, you will be hooked, and want to read. I have many stories to tell. And I can assure you, I will continue to build the Waking Dream until it is indistinguishable from the real world. Because, it only takes a leap of faith to embrace your weirdness, and change the world.

Available now on Nook and Kindle for $6.99 — 355 pages and 70,000 words of weirdness.

Immortal Memories: Volume II will be available in spring, and Waking Dream: The Unkindness Book II will be available on Halloween 2013. The struggle for the control of reality has begun.
